Summary
The Senior Compliance Officer will serve as the primary Compliance Officer (“CO”) and Money Laundering Reporting Officer (“MLRO") for BitMEX Limited in Bermuda.
Reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer of the BitMEX Group, this role is crucial for identifying, assessing, and monitoring compliance risks specific to BitMEX Limited. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and implementing a robust compliance program for BitMEX Limited, supported by the broader BitMEX Group Compliance team.
This role will be responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing management of the entity's compliance and financial crime prevention framework. As the primary point of contact with the BMA (Bermuda Monetary Authority), provide guidance to the local Board of Directors and Group Senior Management, ensuring the Bermuda entity meets its regulatory obligations while aligning with the Group global compliance strategy.
This role requires a proactive leader with deep subject matter expertise in Bermuda's regulatory landscape, a strong understanding of the virtual asset space, and a proven track record of building and running effective compliance programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a primary point of contact for all regulatory matters with the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), managing inquiries, examinations, and periodic reporting.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to the Bermuda entity's Board of Directors and the Group Chief Compliance Officer on all local AML/ATF, sanctions, and regulatory compliance matters.
- Take full ownership of the DAB license, ensuring all conditions are met on an ongoing basis and that the business operates within the license's permissions.
- Develop and present comprehensive compliance reports to the local Board and the Group's Executive Risk Committee (ERC), detailing program effectiveness, risk levels, and key developments
- Identify, assess, and monitor compliance risks related to BitMEX Limited.
- Develop and implement a robust compliance program for the operations of BitMEX Limited.
- Conduct and maintain the annual AML/CFT Enterprise Risk Assessment for the Bermuda entity, identifying inherent risks across customers, products, channels, and geographies and assessing the effectiveness of mitigating controls
- Assume the role of MLRO, establishing and maintaining AML and CTF policies to ensure they align with Bermuda and the BitMEX Group requirements.
- Maintain effective communications across the BitMEX Group concerning compliance issues.
- Provide compliance training from time to time and foster a high level of awareness of compliance requirements.
- Manage the end-to-end suspicious activity reporting process for the filing of STRs with the Bermuda Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA)
- Make other appropriate reports to the BMA and other regulatory bodies.
Qualifications
- Approximately 12+ years of experience in compliance with at least 7 years in a senior compliance role, preferably within a BMA-regulated financial institution.
- Track record of building, leading, and managing a compliance function, including policy development, risk assessment, and regulatory engagement.
- Strong knowledge of AML and CTF policies and Bermuda regulatory requirements, including but not limited, to the Digital Asset Business Act (“DABA”).
- Prior experience in the digital assets/cryptocurrency/VASP sector is strongly preferred, with a deep understanding of the unique ML/TF risks associated with virtual assets
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain effective communications across a group structure.
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- A relevant professional certification (e.g., CAMS, CFE, ICA Diploma) is highly desirable.
- Ability to provide compliance training and foster awareness.
- Experience in reporting to regulatory bodies such as the BMA.
