Summary

About the team + role

The Networking team’s mission is to build and deploy the fundamental systems that enable real-time, low-latency, inter-service communication in a highly-scalable, robust, and reliable manner.

As Engineering Manager, Cloud Networking, you will lead the networking team in delivering the next generation of Robinhood’s cloud networking infrastructure, making strategic decisions that balance risk, innovation, and long-term maintainability. Robinhood’s products are powered by a multitude of microservices working together. In order for these microservices to work together, they need to be able to locate and connect with each other. We use Kubernetes for our container orchestration, Terraform as our infrastructure as code framework, Istio for our service mesh, Envoy as our edge and service proxy, and Unbound and CoreDNS as our DNS.

The role is located in the office location(s) listed on this job description which will align with our in-office working environment. Please connect with your recruiter for more information regarding our in-office philosophy and expectations.

  3. Mentor and coach junior engineers in the team.
  4. Lead organization-wide roadmaps and drive collaboration across Robinhood.
  5. Contribute to open source projects.

What you bring

  1. You’ve led teams operating Kubernetes-based platforms at scale in AWS, and have driven adoption of internal standards for deployment, networking, and service communication.
  2. You understand the security implications of service-to-service communication and have experience working with security teams on authentication, encryption, and policy enforcement.
  3. You have experience leading high-performing engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
  4. You are an authority in Cloud Networking and Microservice Architecture.
  5. You know the ins and outs of running and deploying low latency, large scale distributed systems.
  6. Expert level knowledge with working on Kubernetes and AWS.
  7. Familiarity with writing highly concurrent systems and load balancing techniques.
  8. You are a validated tech lead with experience planning and leading large projects with long-term impact on a single system or team.
  9. Proven for driving high impact projects that involved organization-wide collaboration within the company.
  10. Have a strong technical grasp and have excellent judgment on task prioritizations.
  11. A history of crafting and applying new processes and tooling to increase engineering efficiency.
  12. You have a passion for mentoring junior engineers and improving the engineering craftsmanship.
  13. Experienced with service discovery or service mesh type systems
