Summary
The primary responsibilities of the Tax Manager are to (a) coordinate and oversee the outsourced preparation of U.S. federal, state, local, and foreign income tax filings and investor reporting for our funds, (b) provide tax support to deal teams regarding appropriate structuring for investments, operations, and exits, (c) respond to investor inquiries, (d) handle tax controversy matters for the funds and associated legal entities, and (e) ad hoc tax research.
This role requires an in-office presence 2 days a week in our Menlo Park, CA or San Francisco, CA office

- Tax Compliance and Reporting
- Analyze transactions and GAAP trial balance information to convert from GAAP to § 704(b) to federal income tax basis
- Prepare general partner estimates on a quarterly basis including allocation schedules and respective 704(b) book-ups, as applicable
- Liaise with finance team to prepare tax estimates and payments for management company
- Advise the management company accounting team regarding tax issues
- Prepare and update fund entity schedule for realized transactions, including analyzing the book/tax adjustments
- Track flow-thru investments and ensure K-1s have been received from the underlying fund managers
- Advise on tax structuring for our fund and general partner vehicles
- Compile information for outside accounting firms to prepare partnership income tax returns and Schedules K-1
- Review returns and K-1s prepared by outside accounting firms
- International Tax Reporting
- Track and update foreign investments rollforward schedule and Form 926 disclosures
- Assist outside advisors with CFC and PFIC analysis
- Compile financials and other information required for and review of foreign company filings (Forms 5471 and 8621) and foreign partner reporting and withholding (Forms 1042 and 8804)
- Tax Controversy
- Respond to taxing authority notices
- Manage, either directly or in coordination with outside advisors, tax examinations
- Team Process Improvements
- Analyze current processes and feel inspired to improve upon them with technology and automation
- Lead the evaluation and implementation of selected technology solutions
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or comparable degree
- Advanced skills and experience with the U.S. federal income taxation of partnerships, particularly in the asset management industry
- Have a detailed understanding of U.S. multi-state and foreign filing requirements and reporting obligations for private investment funds
- CPA/MS Tax/JD strongly preferred
- Minimum 6+ years experience, in public accounting, a comparable industry role, or a combination of both
- Highly organized, with strong attention to detail, follow up and follow through on items
- Strong communication skills, and highly collaborative–able to work well across teams
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), GSuite, Adobe Acrobat
- Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
The anticipated salary range for this role is between $179,000 - $209,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.
