Summary

What you’ll do

As a Principal Engineer, you will:

  1. Own mobile platform architecture
  2. Define and evolve the architecture of MetaMask Mobile (React Native + native), leaning into performance by tightly integrating with backend services and optimizing app–backend interactions holistically rather than in isolation.
  3. Make key tradeoffs between JS/TS, RN, and native to balance performance, reliability, and iteration speed.
  4. Design and steward core platform systems (e.g., OTA, analytics foundations, data/persistence, auth, VPN/geolocation primitives).
  5. Lead design and architecture reviews for critical platform areas.
  6. Lead high‑impact, cross‑team initiatives
  7. Drive large upgrades and migrations (React Native, navigation, foundational libraries).
  8. Lead structural performance and stability work: startup time, crash rate, ANRs, jank, memory usage, bundle size.
  9. Break large efforts into incremental, shippable milestones with clear impact.
  10. Elevate developer experience & automation
  11. Improve tooling, local dev ergonomics, build/test pipelines, and release workflows for all mobile engineers.
  12. Establish clear patterns for navigation, state management, and platform primitives to reduce cognitive load.
  13. Push towards “push‑button” releases and reduced operational toil via automation.
  14. Own and continuously improve the mobile SDLC and lifecycle, including CI, testing, and release workflows.
  15. Build an AI‑enabled platform
  16. Integrate AI/LLMs into workflows to scaffold code, enforce patterns, and improve testing and feedback loops.
  17. Help define how tickets and platform patterns leverage AI safely and effectively.
  18. Drive app health & performance culture
  19. Define and evolve metrics and dashboards for performance, stability, and efficiency.
  20. Provide tools and guidance so feature teams can self‑diagnose and own regressions.
  21. Champion shared accountability for app health across all teams contributing to mobile.
  22. Multiply impact through leadership
  23. Mentor Senior/Staff engineers and influence technical direction across Wallet Platform and MetaMask.
  24. Help shape hiring and technical culture for a lean, senior, high‑leverage Mobile Platform team.

Would be great if you brought this to the role

  1. Experience
  2. ~10+ years building and scaling mobile apps, including ownership of large, production React Native or hybrid mobile platforms.
  3. Prior Staff/Principal‑level impact: leading complex, cross‑team technical initiatives.
  4. Technical depth
  5. Deep expertise with React Native in production: architecture, performance, debugging, bridging.
  6. Solid experience with native iOS (Swift/SwiftUI) and/or Android (Kotlin/Jetpack), including native modules and performance tuning.
  7. Strong understanding of mobile CI/CD, release engineering, and OTA systems.
  8. Platform & systems mindset
  9. Track record building internal platforms, shared libraries, or tooling for other engineers.
  10. Comfort operating in ambiguity and designing durable, reusable solutions.
  11. Strong architecture and communication skills; able to align diverse stakeholders.
  12. Leadership & mentorship
  13. Proven ability to influence without authority, set technical direction, and raise the engineering bar.
  14. Experience mentoring senior engineers and shaping technical culture.
  15. AI‑curious / AI‑pragmatic
  16. Experience or strong interest in using AI/LLMs to improve developer productivity and code quality.

Bonus Points

  1. Experience with crypto / Web3, wallets, fintech, or other security‑sensitive apps.
  2. Contributions to open‑source in React Native, mobile, performance, or tooling.
  3. Experience optimizing apps for emerging markets or low‑end devices.
  4. Background in fully remote, globally distributed teams.

The salary range for US-based candidates only will be determined throughout the interview process depending on experience and skills.

US pay range (not including bonus, equity or other benefits)

$227,000—$272,000 USD
